Alex Attwood, Northern Ireland’s environment minister, has said he wants to cut the drink driving limit. This is part of his proposal to change the laws surrounding drink driving and he intends to lower the amount of blood alcohol limit from 80mg or 100ml to 50mg or 100ml. The limit will be reduced even further for young drivers or those who drive to earn a living.
Mr Attwood then went on to propose that police should be given more rights and should be able to stop motorists randomly, without any reason or suspicion. He said that although a great deal of work has already been done to help the problem of drink driving, further action must be taken which also includes sending those who have committed the offence to a rehabilitation course.
If these proposals are put into force, Northern Ireland will have different legal rules to the UK. Many other countries in Europe adopt this lower alcohol limit such as France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
