Drivers now facing possible zero alcohol limit
The Daily Express have recently reported that the government are considering a zero tolerance alcohol limit. Ministers are to discuss the zero tolerance reports of drinking and driving and random breath testing.
The road safety minister, Jim Fitzpatrick said "There was always an argument for zero tolerance.....it is difficult to assess whether you are over the limit because peoples metabolisms are different and it depends on many different factors". The consequence for drivers is that if you have any alcohol in your system at all and the governments plans go ahead then you could face an automatic disqualification.
The concern for motorists is that a motorist could have some alcohol in their system by using popular brands of mouthwash which could lead to an automatic period of disqualification. This will have to be considered by the government. Indeed, there are many products that can be obtained over the counter which contain traces of alcohol which could potentially lead to an automatic period of disqualification. These factors will need to be considered carefully by the government before imposing a zero tolerance policy.

Legal update
As of Monday 24 September 2007, the penalty for offences of failing to provide information as to the identity of the driver as required by s172 Road Traffic Act 1988 will increase. If convicted of this offence, a driver will now receive an endorsement of 6 penalty points rather than 3 penalty points.
This will apply to any offences committed on or after 24.09.07. This change is set out in the Road Safety Act 2006.
