Government Plans More 20mph Speed Limit Zones

February 8, 2010

With hundreds of thousands of road traffic incidents each year, the UK government is hoping to introduce new plans to lower speed limits in Britain, in order to reduce the number of motor vehicle injuries affecting the public.

The key idea for road accident reduction plans is to decrease the speed limit in built up areas to 20 miles per hour, particularly around areas where there are likely to be large numbers of children such as parks and schools.

Research by the British Medical Journal has shown that around 70 per cent of drivers currently exceed the speed limit in a 30mph zone, whilst two thirds of all accidents resulting in fatalities or personal injury occur in an area with the same speed limit.

Small-scale trials of the 20mph speed limit initiative that have already taken place in areas of London and Portsmouth revealed a forty per cent decrease in personal injury incidences as a result of vehicle accidents where the speed limit was lowered to 20mph.

The idea has received initial support from several local councils, as installing new speed limit fines is much more cost effective than traffic calming measures such as speed bumps.

Victims of road traffic accidents can often be left in need of long-term physical therapy to recover from their injuries, and if a child is involved it can mean their parents having to give up work.
